Why do fossil fuel companies want to work with universities? Should universities accept collaboration? And in which situations?
In the Netherlands, a coalition of independent researchers and action groups is mapping fossil ties of Dutch universities. The online database functions as an information source for investigative journalists, action groups, students, university staff and administrators, NGOs, policymakers, and the public. In Belgium, there was already five years ago quite some (effective) activist challenges of university’s ‘fossil investments’ (through their banks and pension funds) and more recently, several researchers and journalists are also investigating industry involvement in research.
What can we learn from the experiences in the Netherlands and Belgium so far, and how can the research best be expanded to make fossil ties of Belgian universities transparent? Join us on the 23th of October to think along and get involved!
In the first part of the evening we will hear from researchers and a journalist about the background of fossil ties in Europe and in Belgium in particular, and the work that has been done to uncover them so far. In the second part, we will have an interactive discussion on the next steps for researching fossil ties of Belgian universities.
